Disaster Management

India has been traditionally vulnerable to the natural disasters on the account of its unique geo-climatic conditions. Floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes, tsunami and landslides would have been a recurrent phenomenon. The direct or indirect impacts of disasters, either natural or man-made are colossal damage, destruction and death.

Disaster management occupies an important place in this country's policy framework as it is the poor and the under-privileged who are worst affected on account of calamities/disasters.

India has set up many departments and organizations for the same such as national disaster management authority (NDMA). But we are yet to achieve satisfactory progress with regard to timely management of disasters. This can be done by raising adequate awareness about the ways to cope with disasters and greater co-ordination between the center and state agencies.

What We Do

We, at Aakanksha Foundation, always alert in emergency rescue during any natural disaster. The people of the disaster affected area should inform the details of the disaster sufficiently ahead. Friends and relatives followed by electronic and print media were the better source of information about occurrence of disasters.

At our foundation, we have trained volunteers for emergency rescue. As soon as we receive the information from the sources, as an emergency response, we start providing relief materials, involvement in rescue operations, arranging temporary shelters, organize health camps, distributing food packets and developing communication facilities. We are successfully implementing a cluster approach to organize multiple humanitarian organizations by including various NGOs.

We alsomonitornational and international aid donations. These efforts bring funds in disaster aid. It also means that we have experience in coordinating relief efforts on the ground of disaster. The steady efforts of our foundation, along with other NGOs are as important as the breadth of hazards we cover. Making the response easier for us, social media now also plays a vital role. Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram and Google Crisis Response are being used to share information about both missing and safe persons and also be used to help raise awareness and funds.
